There was an almost disused path across the school-ground. As it connected the village shrine with their place of burial, the villagers believed that their dead relatives departed by that path and visited them by that path. The children that were about to born would come by that path. So the village priest wanted the new headmaster of the school to accept this belief and re-open the path which he had closed. But the headmaster told the village priest that dead men did not require such paths and that it was an absurd idea which he would like their children to laugh at. The headmaster suggested constructing another path, going around their premises. He said that the ancestors would not find the little detour too burdensome.
