The peddler is a very poor and homeless man. He goes around selling rattraps of wire. He makes the rattraps himself. He collects the material for making rattraps by begging in the stores or at the big farms. Although he works very hard yet his clothes are in rags, his cheeks are sunken and hunger gleams in his eyes. He sleeps wherever he finds shelter. He resorts to petty thefts just to keep his body and soul together. His sufferings make us sympathise with him, and even though he steals and begs, he is not bad at heart. Upon being treated well and kindly by the ironmaster’s daughter, he turns to goodness, and thus experiences an upliftment to a higher status. Thus, he signs himself as Captain von Stahle-the man he was equal to now. As a matter of fact, the peddler turns to a new start in life due to ironmaster’s daughter, Edla, whose behaviour inspired him.
