Following reaction was carried out at 300 K.

2SO2(g) + O2 (g)  2SO3(g)

How is the rate of formation of SO3 related to the rate of disappearance of O2

(a) -Δ[O2]/Δt  = +1/2Δ[SO3]/Δt

(b) -Δ[O2]/Δt = Δ[SO3]/Δt

(c)  -Δ[O2]/Δt = 1/2Δ[SO3]/Δt

(d) None of these

Correct Option (a) -Δ[O2]/Δt  = +1/2Δ[SO3]/Δt

Explanation:

 Rate of reaction = -1/2Δ[SO2]/Δt  = -Δ[O2]/Δt = +1/2Δ[SO3]/Δt

Therefore, rate of disappearance of O2 is related to rate of formation of SO3 as -

Δ[O2]/Δt  =  +1/2Δ[SO3]/Δt
