Concept:

Average = (Sum of all the items in the group)/(Number of items in the group)

Calculation:

⇒ Total score of all class = 34 × 72 = 2448

⇒ Total score, excluding the top and the least scores = 71 × 32 = 2272

⇒ Let the top and the least scores be x and y respectively.

⇒ x + y = 2448 - 2272 = 176     ----(1)

⇒ x - y = 72     ----(2)

Now, adding the equation(2) form equation(1),

(x + y) + (x - y) = 176 + 72

⇒ 2x = 248

⇒ x = 248/2

⇒ x = 124

∴ The required result will be 124.
