Two mugs of orange juice contain orange pulp and water in ratio of 3 : 1 and 2 : 3. Both the mugs are of equal capacity and filled completely. 100 ml of mixture from mug 1 and 500 ml of mixture from mug 2 is transferred to third mug. The mixture in third mug has filled only 1/3rd of the mug's capacity. Calculate amount of water to be added in mug 3 to have ratio of pulp to water as 1 : 2.

1. 260 ml
2. 245 ml
3. 225 ml

Best answer
Correct Answer - Option 3 : 225 ml

Solution:

Given:

Mug 1; orange pulp: water = 3 : 1

Mug 2; orange pulp: water = 2 : 3

Mixture in mug 3 = 100 ml mug 1 + 500 ml mug 2

Ratio needed = 1 : 2

Calculation:

Amount of orange juice in mug 3

⇒ (100 × 3/ 4) + (500 × 2/ 5)

⇒ Amount of orange juice in mug 3 = 275 ml

⇒ Amount of water in mug 3 = 325 ml (∵ 600 – 275 = 325)

⇒ 600 ml = 1/3rd of total volume of mug 3

⇒ Volume of mug 3 = 1800 ml

Now ratio required of orange pulp : water = 1: 2

⇒ Amount of orange juice in mug = 275 ml

⇒ Amount of water required in mug = 275 × 2

⇒ Amount of water required in mug = 550 ml

⇒ Amount of water needs to be added = 550 – 325

⇒ Amount of water to be added = 225 ml

Amount of water to be added is 225 ml
