Correct Answer - Option 1 : 175 m

Given:

A thief is noticed by a policewoman at a distance of 300 m. The policewoman ran after thief to chase him.

The thief and the policewoman ran at the speed of 8.5 km/hr and 10 km/hr respectively.

Concepts used:

Relative speed = Speed of policewoman – the speed of thief

Distance = Relative speed × time

Calculation:

Relative speed = 10 km/hr – 8.5 km/hr = 1.5 km/hr

Distance = Relative speed × time

Distance between thief and policewoman after 5 minutes = 1.5 × (50/3) × 5 = 125 m

A thief is noticed by a policewoman at a distance of 300 m.

Total distance = 300 m

Remaining distance = Total distance – Distance between thief and policewoman after 5 minutes

⇒ 300 m – 125 m = 175 m

∴ Distance remaining to be covered between them after 5 minutes is 175 m.
